How to Check and Maintain Your Suspension During Winter Months

How to Check and Maintain Your Suspension During Winter MonthsChecking and maintaining your suspension is not just a summer project. In fact, some of the most punishing conditions for a vehicle suspension can happen in the winter months. Pot holes and sinks holes that can spring up in the road during the constant freezing and thawing of winter can cause endless problems for a suspension system. Therefore, checking your suspension system is especially crucial during the winter.

How to Check Your Suspension

The easiest way to check your leaf springs for sag and unevenness is to park your vehicle on an even surface and look from a low angle to see if your car or truck tilts to one side. If so, then the springs on one side may be worn or have come loose due to settling. It is best to further inspect the leaf springs to determine what is causing the sagging or unevenness.

To do a proper inspection of the leaf springs, lift the vehicle and remove the tire to get better access. A clean spring is much easier to inspect to ensure you don’t miss anything important during your inspection.During the winter months it might be necessary to clean the dirt and salt build up with a wire brush to see the springs.

What to Look For and What Could Be Wrong

With the tire off and the springs cleaned, check that all bolts are tight and that the small leaves have not moved due to settling. You should also check for small cracks or damage in the leaves that could lead to breakages if left unfixed. Also, look for excess wear or distortion of the leaf springs. That could be an indication that your load is sitting more to one side during transport.

Of course, if you find a problem during your inspection and are not sure what to do, the team at General Spring can help.
